Temporary residence for EU citizens

  • EU citizens who are planning to stay in the Czech Republic for longer than 3 months and who have not in the past threatened national security or disrupted public order;
  • The family members of EU citizens who are not themselves citizens of a European Union state.

Confirmation of temporary residence for an EU citizen

If you are an EU citizen, you can obtain confirmation of temporary residence for an EU citizen. Confirmation of temporary residence for an EU citizen is issued without limitation of time and is valid until temporary residence comes to an end or permanent residence is awarded.  Given the unlimited validity, there is no need for extension.

Confirmation of temporary residence is not a required condition for EU citizens to reside in the Czech Republic. In spite of the fact that you, as an EU citizen, can reside in the Czech Republic without holding this document, getting it is a requirement for certain acts, for example when applying for a loan with a bank.

Temporary residence permit for a family member of an EU citizen

If you are a family member of an EU citizen, but are not yourself an EU citizen, you can obtain a temporary residence permit for a family member of an EU citizen. After your application has been cleared, you will be issued with a permit in the form of a residence card for a family member of an EU citizen for the same duration of residence as the EU citizen. Temporary residence permit for a family member of an EU citizen may be issued for a maximum of 5 years; however, the period of validity of temporary residence may be extended.
