A blue card is a special type of permit that allows you to work and reside in the Czech Republic for a period of longer than 3 months. A blue card therefore combines a long-term residence permit and a work permit.
A blue card is issued for a specific work position. In contrast to an employee card, however, it is only intended for employment which requires a high level of qualification. To meet the requirement of a “high level of qualification”, the applicant for a blue card must have duly completed university education or higher vocational education whose studies lasted a minimum of 3 years.
The validity of a blue card is 3 months longer than the time for which the employment contract has been concluded, but a maximum of 2 years. A blue card may thereafter be extended, at earliest 120 days before the expiration of its validity and at latest on the final day of the validity of the existing blue card.
